Living in Memphis… With Chickens?!

Deanna Caswell’s family has acquired semi-celebrity status in their suburban Memphis neighborhood, all thanks to a family of chickens she moved into her backyard three years ago! Neighbors of the Caswells have become fond of the chickens who can be heard clucking enthusiastically at feeding time; however, Deanna didn’t become a chicken keeper for the popularity! One reason why the Caswells moved the family of chickens in was for their eggs. Her five chickens produce eggs that are better than store-bought options. She attributes the higher egg quality to the nutritious diet she feeds her feathered friends which is considerably more favorable than what egg factory chickens eat. Another reason Deanna chose to raise chickens is her kids; she wanted her children to have a greater understanding of life and of food and its origins. “I don’t want [her kids] to think it just comes from the store.” Deanna says. Your Memphis mover here thinks backyard chickens are neat; it would be nice to see more mini-farms like Deanna’s while out relocating our customers!
