The greenprint for the Mid-South Regional Greenprint and Sustainability Plan has been revealed and is set to make Memphis more eco-friendly by 2040. The plan includes improving public transportation systems and enhancing sustainable uses for area green spaces.

The plan is geared towards enhancing “regional sustainability by establishing a unified vision for a region-wide network of green space areas.” The first draft of the plan was released in 2013, with a $2.6 million grant in order to have it prepared.

Within the text of the plan it states that “while downtown Memphis is a critical hub for population, employment, and commerce, the spread of population and employment densely extends throughout the region, suggesting the need for greater connectivity to population and employment across all modes of transportation.” One of the target goals is to foster a healthier Mid-South by means of more transportation options, better food options, and promoting more physical activity. Some of those physical activity improvements include 196 miles of bicycle-friendly streets.

Fair housing is also a main focal point, in which the plan describes efforts to offer fair housing by increasing access to neighborhoods for people with disabilities and lower incomes. Essentially, the plan outlines that it would like to have more people moving to nicer neighborhoods within the community. The offer aims to make neighborhoods more pedestrian-friendly, by increasing access to public transportation and walkability.

Lastly, the plan hopes to improve upon existing parks in the area. Some of the major hubs that will undergo improvements include: West Memphis Eco-Park, Friendship Park, and the new plan for the Loosahatchie River Greenway in Arlington.

The South was the heart of Civil Rights Movement. Places like Memphis and Selma are full of its history. If you are moving to the area and would like to know more, your Memphis moving company recommends the new Oscar-nominated film Selma. Thousands of Memphis students will not have to pay for their ticket to see this MLK-inspired movie.

Paramount Pictures, Malco Theatres, and several other donors partnered together to donate 10,000 tickets to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders in the Memphis area. The movie shows such an important part of the country’s history, so donors worked with each other to quickly make the free tickets possible.

Students will simply show their student ID or report card at a participating theatre, which includes Malco’s DeSoto Town Cinema, Majestic and Paradiso theatres. More than a dozen other cities have set up programs like this one, to give students Selma tickets for free. Other cities include: Atlanta, Austin, Nashville, Orlando, Miami, and New Orleans.

Selma has been nominated for two Oscars: Best Picture and Best Original Song; which is titled “Glory” and is performed by John Legend and Common. The film tells the Civil Rights story of Dr. Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure voting rights and the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, which ultimately led to the signing of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

If you have recently moved to Memphis, you should check out Selma. It is a great way to learn more about the region’s history and gain a better understanding of the Civil Rights Movement.

New to Memphis? Have you been to Overton Square? If you haven’t, Memphis moving companies highly recommend that you check it out. This entertainment district is full of restaurants, shops, and other venues that make it a great place for you and your family. Overton Square is currently gearing up for its 45th anniversary celebration on May 21st.

The celebration is based on the 45th anniversary of TGI Friday’s grand opening in May 1970, which was square’s first official restaurant. Overton Square is asking the public to help them plan the celebration. People can provide any historic pictures they have of the square, or personal pictures of any parties or celebration that they have hosted at the square over the years. The photos will be used for the party’s marketing. The public can help provide contact details for musicians who performed at the square in the ‘70s, so that the party can also serve as a reunion.

Event management at Overton Square also hopes that the party will be a kind of re-open house. There are so many new shops and restaurants, so it will be a great time for people to explore, especially for those who have recently moved to Memphis.

New restaurants include the burger joint Belly Acres, Babalu Tacos & Tapas, and the German restaurant Schweinehaus. A new entertainment venue, Hattiloo Theater, recently had its grand opening at the square. Overton Square is currently 97 percent occupied.

If you have just moved to Memphis and are looking for things to do with your family, take a ride down to Overton Square. You can grab a delicious dinner, meet some locals, and learn a little more about Memphis’ culture.

When moving to a new home, people often find that they need new furniture. Whether it is getting your child a bigger bed or new dresser, upgrading your sofa, or needing to furnish a room you did not have in your old place, it is very common to need new furniture after a move. But moving can be a big expense, so buying top-of-the-line furniture is not something that people usually want to do after spending so much on their move. That is where IKEA steps in. Its pieces are stylish, sleek, and affordable. That is why your Memphis moving company is excited to tell you that an IKEA will be opening on Germantown Parkway in the fall of 2016.

IKEA announced its Memphis plans after the city agreed to a $9.5 million PILOT tax break. The tax break was critical to IKEA’s final decision, and it was the first of its kind for a retail store. We are glad a decision was reached, because an IKEA will be great for Memphis’ economy and residents.

The store plans to hire 175 full-time employees who will be paid $40,000 or more per year, in addition to 100 part-time employees. The store will be located in the suburbs, but IKEA said that they will hire employees throughout the Memphis area. The city also plans on adding additional public transportation routes to the store, in order to help shoppers and new employees gain easy access to the store.

If you are planning a move to Memphis and think that you will need new furniture, but do not want to break the bank, you should really check out IKEA. Even if you have to put most of the stuff together yourself, the price is well worth it.

If you are a movie buff and are moving to Memphis, you are in luck! MovieMaker Magazine ranked Memphis as the number seven best city for filmmakers to live and work in, in 2015. Memphis moving companies know that many of the reasons that Memphis ranked are beneficial to almost anyone moving to town, like affordability.

MovieMaker Magazine used a variety of factors when deciding which cities would make the cut, including:

  • The number of movies created in the city in the past year and their financial success.
  • The city’s film culture, including factors like film festivals, film schools, and how easily accessible equipment is.
  • How friendly the city is to filmmakers, which considers cost of living and available tax incentives.

MovieMaker said cities have to be affordable and offer a “vibrant community” that is friendly to film. Memphis is well-known for its tight-knit filming community, and its Film Commission does not turn projects away, even very small ones.

Memphis has been a filming destination for several years, and plenty of movies have been filmed in town; including: Cast Away, Hustle and Flow, The Client, The Firm, Walk the Line, and the Rainmaker.

Other cities that made the top 10 include: Orlando, Pittsburgh, Savannah, New Orleans, and Baton Rouge, which came in at number one due to tax incentives and the amount of business that followed.

If you are moving to Memphis, catch up on some of the city’s cinematic gems and get ready for more to come! This is the second year in a row that Memphis was included on the list, and we are sure that tons of filmmakers will take notice.

If you are looking to move to a state and city that cares about the earth, move to Memphis before 2019 and be a part of the city that wants to be clean.

Greater Memphis Chamber officials are pushing for a four-year effort to clean up litter and waste found around Memphis. The economic and community development organization is calling it a “moon mission”, one that cares about Memphis being a home to so many people; and Memphis officials care about their “home”.

Spence Wilson Jr., Principal of Kemmons Wilson Companies says that, “Memphis is our home, and how our home looks is a direct reflection of how we look at ourselves and how others look at us.”

But the Greater Memphis Chamber does not want to just be the cleanest city, they also want the city to flourish; aiming to boost entrepreneurship and education efforts.

When it comes to promoting entrepreneurship in the city, the chamber’s Memphis Entrepreneurship Powered Innovation Center has goals to create 1,000 jobs in a ten-year span. The jobs that the chamber is aiming to create, deal in the fields of logistics, emerging technologies, health care, bioscience, and information and software technology.

The chamber is also splitting $70 million between Shelby and Davidson counties for early childhood education initiatives; $35 million of which will go directly to Shelby County schools in order to create more classrooms.

The chamber has a Chairman’s Circle that consists of over 100 business leaders that continuously push considerable goals for the Memphis area.

Target is a nationwide retail giant that originated in Minneapolis and is now pushing for a Memphis location in DeSoto County.

Target is currently finalizing a lease for a 900,000-square-foot-building in Southeast Memphis, to use as a distribution center. Up for discussion this week, Target is asking for incentives from Memphis and Shelby County for their industrial project, one that would create 600 jobs.

Anonymous sources say that the approval from the city for Target’s project is very likely, and that with the astounding number of 600 jobs, it would be the second largest job-producing economic development effort for the city and DeSoto County for 2014.

If you are moving to Memphis in 2015 and will be looking for employment, stay up-to-date with the new Target location and positions. Industrial activity in Memphis is continuously increasing, so if you are planning on moving to Tennessee and work in business, the Memphis area is the ideal location to move to.

The Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis ReStore saw its largest sale day of the year, with their 2014 “Go North ReStock the ReStore” event; raking in over $10,000 in sales.

Director of Marketing and Communications for Memphis Habitat Jessica N. Hord, explained that this year’s ReStock and ReStore event was, “a successful event in that it generated not only a nice number of donations on that particular day, it also increased our sales, increased the number of calls to the ReStore and helped generate an increase in website traffic. And we continue to see the residual effects of the event in terms of awareness…The donations are so important because we can’t raise money to support Habitat’s mission if we don’t have donated items to sell.”

If you have recently moved to Memphis, the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and local moving companies want you to check out Memphis’ Habitat for Humanity ReStore for anything that you may need to buy for your new home, and the greatest part is that the money from your purchase will go towards Habitat for Humanity efforts.

Director of Construction and Retail Operations for Memphis Habitat Greg Webb, says that they even have a lot of Christmas supplies that families in the area can take advantage of, and that they are inexpensive compared to the larger retail chains.

Memphis Daily News calls the store “a shopper’s paradise, including virtually everything you can think of, even the kitchen sink” so be sure to check it out and you may find items for your new home, at great prices.
