A little over a week ago, two republican senators filed legislation to repeal Tennessee’s Common Core standards, despite the attempts that have already been made by Governor Bill Haslam for public review of the higher benchmarks in English and math.
The recent proposal calls for a Tennessee Standards Commission (TSC) to be set up. Once initiated, the Tennessee Standards Commission would make recommendations to the State Board of Education on new standards to set for the state’s K-12 public schools.
Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Dolores Gresham told The Associated Press that the bill to repeal Common Core and institute the TSC, will allow the state to better plan for the future.
“It is the next logical step that will take us into the future and ensure that we as Tennesseans have control over our education system,” said Gresham.
Common Core currently sets the standard for English and math. Students are required to meet these standards and at a certain rate. Common Core aims to prepare students for college and the workforce by providing them with critical thinking and problem solving skills. The controversy comes from the test scores and that students and teachers are evaluated based off of how well they perform on Common Core exams.
State legislation has teetered with the options of repealing Common Core or simply revamping it, making it more efficient for differentiating learning levels and capabilities of students.
